Hughes joined Manchester United after leaving school in the summer of 1980, having been spotted by the team's North Wales talent scout Hugh Roberts.
However he did not make his first team debut for three years — in a 1–1 draw away to Oxford United in the FA Cup, in the 1983–84 season.
Like many other United legends, Hughes quickly became a favourite at Old Trafford by scoring on his debut.
Hughes went on to make a total of 467 league appearance for Manchester United scoring a total of 163 goals along the way.
