Teddy Sheringham : Cleverley Can Fill The Void Left By Paul Scholes

Manchester United legend Teddy Sheringham is convinced Tom Cleverley can fill the void left by the retirement of Paul Scholes.

The former Manchester United striker was impressed by the young midfielder in victory over Tottenham last night.

He told talkSPORT: “It’s at a time that without Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic they would not have wanted to be starting the season but the players that have come in have done so well. Smalling looks like he has been there for years and the boy Phil Jones looked fantastic last night.

“But the two that have been most impressive for me have been Cleverley and Welbeck. Cleverley in midfield looks like a very accomplished player, he plays a very experienced game in midfield, just passing it and moving it when he has to. I’m sure he’s had years of watching Roy Keane and Paul Scholes and the way they play and I think he will be a follow on from that.

“And Welbeck; I am very impressed with him, especially with his movement and his backheel for the goal last night was fantastic.”

Patrice Evra Ready To Mentor Man Utd Youngsters

Patrice Evra has revealed that he is happy to take on a mentoring role this season.

As one of the senior members of the squad, the French international left back is acutely aware of his role in the young players’ development. And it’s a responsibility he’s not going to shirk.

Evra told manutd.com : “We have lost a lot of experienced players like Edwin [van der Sar], Paul Scholes and Gary Neville, but you can see now that the team is very fresh, it has a lot of energy and the football is quick,".

"The [young players] just have to keep going and it’s up to players like myself, Rio and Vidic to make sure they keep [developing].”

Sir Alex Delighted With The Form Of Chris Smalling

Sir Alex Ferguson is reportedly delighted with Chris Smalling's form at right-back.

The former Fulham defender was again impressive for victory over Tottenham.

Ferguson said: "He had a marvellous season last year and he is showing more maturity. He has done a great job at right back. You'd think he'd played there all his life. We are pleased with all these players.

"They have all done well tonight and you cannot criticise any of them."
